Our Biggest LinkedIn Pet Peeve
Posted on August 7, 2015
Once a week we do a check-in call with our three spring interns to discuss what they did this week, what they want to do more of, and to give them an opportunity to ask any questions. This week, one of our Rutgers interns asked about LinkedIn. Shayna, our campus programs manager, had some great advice to share on her biggest LinkedIn pet peeve:
Shayna said, “My biggest pet peeve is when people I don’t know try to connect with me on LinkedIn but don’t include a message.” She said, “I want to know who you are and how I can help you in the message. If you just include the generic (I’d like to add you to my network), it’s just going to sit in my inbox for weeks.”
Shayna said that she recently spoke on an alumni panel at her alma matter, Ithaca College, about this tip. After speaking on the panel and sharing her tip she got several messages on LinkedIn from students asking to connect with her. They shared who they were, how they met her, and how she could help them. This is exactly what Shayna recommended.
