4 Ways To Start Your Own Business Today

Posted on September 15, 2016

I started running my business (www.internqueen.com) full-time in 2009. However, I started thinking about my business in 2006. In took me a good three years to decide that I was going to be “The Intern Queen” full-time. If you don’t have your own business but you are thinking about it – here are a few helpful hints:

  1. Buy the web domain and everything like it. I use GoDaddy.com for my web hosting. Buying web domains is actually really inexpensive. I pay about $9.99 a year for most of my domains.
  2. Understand the market. What exists that’s similar to your idea? Don’t be scared of starting your business just because something similar exists. There is room in the world for your company as well. Just make sure you are knowledgeable and have a solid understanding of the current landscape of that industry.
  3. Stop talking, start doing. If you’ve been talking about your idea for a while, what are you waiting for? Start doing it! You don’t have to quit your job right away. It took me three years to figure out that I really wanted to run my business full-time. Start putting the little spare time you do have into your business. See what happens.
  4. Engage in conversations about your idea. Think to yourself, who can I speak to freely about my idea? Where can I educate myself on starting a business? Identify people in your personal and professional network who won’t be “off-put” by your new business idea. Your boss might not be the best person to speak with as if they hear you are thinking of starting your own business, they might get territorial. Also, what local events can you attend to have conversations with other entrepreneurs and learn about how they do what they do?
